What is RSS?

RSS is an easy way for you to keep updated automatically on websites you like. Instead of you having to go to websites to see if they've written a new article or feature, you can use RSS (which stands for Really Simple Syndication) to get them to tell you every time they have something new.

RSS is a format for syndicating news and the content of news-like sites, including major news sites like Wired, news-oriented community sites like Slashdot, and personal weblogs. Once information about each item is in RSS format, an RSS-aware program can check the feed for changes and react to the changes in an appropriate way.

RSS-aware programs called news readers are popular in the weblogging community and with 'news junkies'. RSS is becoming increasingly popular with many weblogs and news sites now making content available in RSS. A news reader can help you keep up with all your favorite sites by checking their RSS feeds and displaying new items from each of them.

How can I make use of RSS?

In general you need to get hold of a program called a News Reader. This displays RSS information feeds from your chosen websites on your computer. All you then have to do is choose which RSS feeds you want for instance, the 'latest news' feed from PlasmaDesign.co.uk.

How do I get a News Reader?

There are a range of different News Readers available. Different News Readers work on different operating systems, so you will need to take this into account when you make your choice. As a Mac user my personal favourite is called 'NewsFire'. Apple has intergrated a superb RSS news reader into Safari, the next-gen internet browser currently shipping with Tiger Mac OS X 10.4. NetNewsWire is also highly regarded in the Mac community. Windows users have a wide range of options when it comes to picking a news reader. Newz Crawler, FeedDemon and Awasu are all feature rich, capable news readers compatible with Windows systems. In addition there are also several RSS news reader extensions that Firefox users (on both Windows & Mac) can use, the best of which is called 'Sage'.

How can I subscribe to RSS feeds from PlasmaDesign.co.uk?

At the very bottom of this page is a small orange 'XML' icon. This is the recognized symbol representing an RSS feed. This icon contains the link information to the PlasmaDesign.co.uk RSS feed. You then need to follow the instructions for your particular News Reader in order to add this XML feed to your RSS list.
